The first resident crew of the International Space Station Alpha launches into orbit, establishing a permanent human presence in space. Mankind is no longer a purely planet-bound species.
A terrorist atack on the United States leaves thousands of innocent civilians dead, a horrific tragedy that forces all nations of the world to re-evaluate their values and priorities, and galvanizes the people of Earth to strive harder to put their differences behind them.
Earth launches the first interstellar space probe, Nomad. Designed by Jackson Roykirk, Nomad is tasked with seeking out new life forms. It will later collide with an alien craft designed to sterilize soil samples; the two probes will manage to combine themselves but in the process their programming will be distorted, causing the resultant entity to seek out and sterilize alien life forms.
Captain Shaun Geoffrey Christopher leads a successful Earth-Saturn space mission, paving the way for the continuation of manned space exploration.
Propulsion technologies, and speeds, continue to improve. "Sleeper ships" become a thing of the past.
The last sub-light probe ship Audwin departs Earth for parts unknown, carrying approximately 200 persons of Eastern European, Russian, Canadian, and Brazilian decent, along with an indeterminant amount of genetic material and other technologies.
The American government creates the Sanctuary districts to contain those who are unemployed. The districts quickly become ghetto areas.
The Bell Riots begin within Sanctuary District 4 of San Francisco. The riots lead to the abolishment of the Sanctuary Districts, forcing the USA to at last begin to deal with its social problems.

Lieutenant John Kelly, piloting the Ares IV command module in Mars orbit, reports the approach of a large unknown object seconds before he and his craft vanish. Crewmates Rose Kumagawa and Andrei Novakovich, on the planet surface at the time, are stranded but later rescued.
The 52nd state is admitted to the United States of America.
The New United Nations rules that no Earth person can be held responsible for the crimes of their ancestors.
Hover cars come into widespread use on Earth.
NASA launches the spacecraft Charybdis, on July 23, commanded by Colonel Steven Richey. This is the third manned attempt to explore beyond the solar system. The ship is declared missing after telemetry is lost. It is discovered in 2365 in the Theta 116 solar system.
Television ceases to exist as a form of entertainment.
Space vehicle Charybdis, launched from Earth in 2037, arrives at the eighth planet in the Theta 116 stystem. An unknown alien intelligence on the planet discovers a book (Hotel Royale) in the possession of mission commander Colonel Steven Richey and creates an environment based on the book in an effort to sustain Richey's life.
World War III kills 600 million people and leaves very few governments on Earth. Humanity struggles to survive.
Zephram Cochrane makes Humanities first faster than light journey. The flight results in First Contact between Humans and Vulcans.
SS Valiant embarks on a deep space exploration mission. Expedition is lost and is eventually swept out of the galaxy. The ship is nearly destroyed while trying to return across the energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy. Six crew members are killed, but a sevenmth experiences a mutation that dramatically enhances latent ESP powers, making that person a threat to the ship and its crew. The Valiant's captain later orders the ship destroyed to prevent the mutated crew member from escaping.
The Klingon Emperor dies. No successor is appointed because the Klingon High Council has grown in power to the point where it effectively controls the Empire.
One of the two Sporocystian life forms which have been caring for the Ocampa for the last five hundred generations leaves, taking two thousand Ocampa with her. They establish a new home on a space borne array several thousand light years away.
Quinn is imprisoned in a comet nucleus by the Q continuum. He will be released in 2372 by the crew of the USS Voyager.
