Background:
Marcus was born in Gill City, on the world of Zeon, the oldest child of Commander Thomas Shepherd, and his wife, Aurelia Mureik, a senior administrator for Zemik Corporation, a company that develops replicator technology. Marcus is a direct descendent of Admiral Douglas Tancred Shepherd, who, in 2240, became the Chief of Staff of Starfleet (title later changed to C-n-C) after the mysterious death of Admiral Marcus van Dieman during the last Bable conference to be held on Earth.

Marcus had a normal upbringing on Zeon. He was raised primarily by his mother, his father was off on missions alot, but spent as much time at home as possible. Marcus became a kind of unofficial man of the house, helping his mom raise his siblings, along with trying to balance his own life.

Marcus attended School 482 of the Zeon Unified School System until he was 16 years old.  He graduated at 16, and applied for early admission to Starfleet Academy. Marcus was always interested in astronomy and astrophysics while growing up, and was able to get assigned to the Stellar Cartography tract in the science division. Marcus also took command courses during his time, and even took the infamous Kobiyashi Maru exam, which he failed, but was able to destroy one Borg cube before his simulated ship was destroyed.

Marcus graduated Starfleet Academy in 2366, and was fast-tracked to Lieutenant, junior grade, and was assigned to the USS Argen. After spending two years on the Argen, charting gasous anomalies and other such stellar phenomena, Marcus was transfered to the USS Goddard. He spent a year on the Goddard as a Lt., j.g., and received the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry for service above the call of duty during the Klingon Civil War. After the war, Marcus stayed on the Goddard, and was promoted to full Lieutenant in 2369. Marcus stayed on the Goddard for another year, and transfered to Starbase 200.

Marcus was only on the Starbase for one year, and during the time, he did not get along with his superior officer, the head of the Science Department.   The Lt. Commander in charge of the department (a Tellarite by the name of Garv) thought Marcus a young upstart who was trying to take his job away.

Marcus then found himself on the USS Budapest for two years, in a very comfortable and professional place.  No one in the science department on the Budapest was like Garv, thankfully. In 2373, during the Borg incursion, Marcus earned the Silver Palm with Cluster for his service aboard the Budapest.

Near the end of 2373, Marcus was offered a chance to go to Earth and teach Stellar Cartography at the Academy, along with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander. He found himself saying goodbye to the Goddard, and heading back to Earth.   Marcus settled into his new role as a professor, and also taught extra-curricular classes as well, and found, to his surprise, found Garv taking one of his classes. Garv was still a Lt. Commander, and was still at Starbase 200, but was back on Earth taking some extra classes. Garv was not happy when he found out who it was that was teaching his class.  Marcus made his ex-superior's life slightly difficult, but no where near as hard as the Tellarite had been on him.

In 2374, Marcus was tapped for a covert mission with Captain Sisko on board the stolen Jem'hadar vessel as senior stellar cartographer.  Marcus was assigned to the mission out of Starbase 375.  He earned the Medal of Honor for that mission, and returned back to SB 375, expecting to go back to Earth.  Instead, he was offered the department head position at Deep Space 8 of Stellar Cartography.

In late 2374, the USS Charleston was docked at DS8, and the Stellar Cartographer Dept. Head fell ill, and was placed into DS8's infirmary.  With no one qualified to run the department on the Charleston, Captain Solarn ask DS8's CO if Marcus could be temporarily transfered until their officer was well. Marcus was transfered to the Charleston, and ended up staying on board until early 2375, when he was transfered to the USS Cyrex as the Department head of Stellar Cartographer, and as the Second Officer of the steamrunner-class vessel as well. During his time on the Cyrex, Marcus earned the Christopher Pike Medal of Valor for a skirmish with Dominion forces.

Marcus stayed on the Cyrex for over a year, until he was tapped by Vice-Admiral Colleen McCarthy and Commodore Thelv of the Starfleet College of Engineering.  Unbeknownst to Marcus, McCarthy and Thelv hand-picked Marcus from about 40 potential officers to command the recently refit USS Tomar, an experimental saber-class Frigate/escort vessel. Marcus took command of the Tomar and began his career as a Captain in late 2376.

Marcus has found himself fast-tracked in the past two years, from Captain to Rear Admiral, he has moved up the ranks very quickly since his transfer from the 15th to the 4th fleet.

Since being named as CO of the Tomar, Marcus has been back in time in the Andromeda Galaxy, and has commanded a diplomatic mission to the Cyteen Union, a lost colony of humans from the Eugenics era.

Personality Profile:
Marcus is a simple man, he does what he needs to to get the job done. He expects the people under him to work, but doesn't mind how they do the job, as long as the job is done, and it is done right, and ethically.

Marcus loves Starfleet, but he doesn't like the militaristic turn that has been sweeping through the fleet since the Dominion Conflict. Marcus is an explorer and a scientist, and Starfleet is first and foremost an exploraion team, not a military force like the Marines are. He doesn't require saluting on his ship, in fact, he frowns upon it.  He also doesn't like it when they yell "Captain on the Brdige!" It annoys him. Marcus is not a simply follow the Fleet rules, in some ways, he is very similar to Captain Kirk, and Captain Picard. He does what is necessary, and justifies it later. That was a big part of why Admiral McCarthy tapped Marcus as the commander of the Tomar.

Marcus is also one who normally has a calm demeanor, but when pushed too far, he can get angry.

Marcus also has no problem saying what is on his mind, no matter who it is to, whether the C-n-C of Bravo Fleet, the entire Starfleet, or even the President of the Federation.
